Photographer's Description
The three-pointed peak on the Tennessee-North Carolina state line , and overlooking the largest wilderness section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park , was named for Col . David C . Chapman , of Knoxville , who led the long and difficult fight that brought about the establishment of the park . In naming this 6430-foot peak--fourth highest in the park--in honor of Col . Chapman , the United States Geographic Board , on October 7 , 1931 issued a statement in which it said that the peak was named for David C . Chapman , whose initiative and persistent activity through many years was largely responsible for the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park .
