KNOXVILLE WOMAN
FOR
SENATOR
Present indications are that Senator Shields will be appointed to the
supreme court bench in which event,
the office of United States Senator
would be vacant, and the vacancy
would have to be filled by the governor. A movement was started yesterday in Knoxville to have Gov.
Taylor appoint Mrs. L. Crozier
French to succeed Sen. Shields.
Mrs French has contributed several articles to the HERALD on political and educational matters, which
makes this appointment of local interest. She has been prominent in
many reforms in state laws, and is
held in high esteem by Knoxville people, where she has spent many years
of her life. Should Mrs. French be
appointed, she would be the first woman to ever serve in the United
States Senate. Mrs. Felton who was
recently appointed in Georgia to fill
out the unexpired term of Sen. Tom
Watson will likely never take her
seat in the senate, but will simply be
given the title of senator with the
salary for the few months of the unex
